I’d been overweight most of my life. Over time, I gained 60+ pounds with pregnancies and gestational diabetes. I tried so many weight loss programs, but none really worked. My health was on a downward spiral. I was suffering with Metabolic Syndrome, fatty liver, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. I was exhausted due to sleep apnea. Osteoarthritis led to a knee replacement. This limited my mobility and my weight kept going up. Time to make a lifestyle change!
In February 2022, I started a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction (TCR) diet plan along with a resistance training program 2-3 times per week through B Well Nation. My starting weight was 231 pounds. Now I’m down to 172! My waist used to be 50 inches, now it’s 40 inches. My glucose and insulin levels went down significantly and are now at healthy levels. These lifestyle changes gave me a different outlook on life. I have so much more energy and I feel like a new person. I am so thankful for this program and am glad that it is helping so many others. I am continuing to expand my knowledge of TCR and very interested in sharing my story to help others.
Because of how this program impacted me, I went on to become a Nutrition Network certified Health Coach Advisor!
In May of 2022, I started my journey with Dr. Karen Jerome-Zapadka and the VGA Center for Obesity Medicine. I wasn’t sure what the outcome would be, but I knew I needed to make a change in my everyday life.
At my first appointment I started the program with Dr. Zapadka and a nutritionist. I loved that they gave me a hands-on approach to the changes I needed to make. Working together, we were able to solidify a plan for a low carbohydrate/appropriate protein diet.
Since I started this program, I have lost 110 pounds -- without medication. I was able to reverse all my health risks and get my life back on track. I no longer have fatty liver, abnormal lipids, Pre-diabetes or Insulin Resistance.
The quarterly follow-up appointments continue to help keep me accountable through the highs and lows of life! I am beyond thankful I made the step towards a healthier life by setting up that first appointment and following through with the program!

I want to thank Dr. Jerome-Zapadka for being my guardian angel doctor on two occasions.
In November 2019 I had a routine colonoscopy. The physician’s assistant noted that I had fatty liver deposits on a previous scan, and suggested I get a FibroScan® to check my liver. That test showed I had severe fatty liver disease. I then met with Dr. Zapadka, who suggested I make diet and lifestyle changes. She advised me to avoid ultra-processed foods and added sugar.
My breakfast for years consisted of plain Cheerios with milk and bananas and cinnamon toast. I ate bread for all three meals daily. I consumed a lot of sugar every day. For years I would always get hunger pains and would have to eat something right away, such as cookies or candy. With the help of my wife, Karan, and a book recommended by Dr. Zapadka, I corrected my liver disease in nine months! I am 35 pounds lighter and no longer feel hunger pains.
During my annual visit in 2021 Dr. Zapadka reviewed my medication. She recommended I get a CT coronary calcium score to better assess my medication needs. I have a strong family history of heart disease; my father passed away at 48 of a massive heart attack. My calcium score was extremely elevated. I consulted with my cardiologist and further testing led to a triple bypass in 2021.
My repeat FibroScan® in August of 2024 showed my results are still normal. Thank you to my wife, Karan for supporting my diet change. And thanks to Dr. Zapadka, I am healthy, and I feel better than I ever have in sixty years.
I was screened for Dr. Jerome-Zapadka's pilot study, " So You Think You Are Healthy?". That screening showed that I was insulin resistant and overweight. So, I participated in her Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction nutrition and resistance band program for four months. By the end of the fourth month I had lost 35 pounds, reduced my insulin level to normal, and improved signs of fatty liver.
My overall health and energy improved because of this program. I started this program two years ago and continue to follow the plan, keeping the weight off and my insulin levels at a normal range.
